Despite Loss On The Road, Positive Vibes From The DBB

Going into yesterday’s game, the DBB LZOÖ Linz-Wels knew they would have their work cut-out for them. Four players would be missing leaving the WU19 with only seven players who would make the trip to Vienna for the showdown with the 1st Place Timberwolves.

Completely missing the start, the Timberwolves took advantage of DBB’s black-out to lead 11-0, a quick timeout and the guests scored the next four points. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to stem the tide, as the Timberwolves used their early momentum to take a 22-8 lead after one quarter of play.

In the 2nd quarter, the Team from Upper Austria’s offense was not able to get in rhythm and their miscues continued to provide the home side with opportunitites to build on their lead, which they did. At haltime, the lead grew to 38-16.

Although the DBB side fought hard in the 1st half, they were not rewarded for their efforts, but in the 3rd quarter, the rewards were different. Winning the quarter 15-8, the DBB behind the strong play of Lisa Ganhör began to fight their way back. With 4:00 to go in the quarter trailing by 21 points, DBB used a small 7-2 spurt to cut the lead back to 46-31. Ganhör was strong scoring half her teams points in the quarter, but it was the defensive effort of the guests from Upper Austria, which held the home side to eight points.

In the 4th quarter, the Timberwolves would decide the game for themselves through clutch shooting from Dumancic and in the end the final score showed 58-40 for the team which remainded undefeated in the WU19 ÖMS.

Coach Beszczynski after the game: “Although we lost the game today, we showed a lot of character and heart in how we played. The 7 girls who made the trip stayed together and kept fighting every minute on the floor. Our defense in the 2nd half was solid and we learned some things about ourselves. The start was disappointing, but we turned that negative into a positive to show well of ourselves on the day.”
